SELOUS
GAME RESERVE
Named
after Captain Fredrick Courtney Selous, a legendary 19th century
Naturist explorer and hunter, Selous Game Reserve was founded
in 1905 and it's the most remote and unexplored game protected
area in the world with 54,600 sq.
km.
Its size is simply stunning, bigger than Switzerland. It's also
perhaps the most pristine wilderness still remaining in Africa,
with wide variety of animals habitat, acacia and moimbo woodland,
open grassland, swamps and riverine forest in the many tributaries
of the Rufiji river which flows through the reserve.
Selous
game reserve was designated a world heritage site by the UN (United
Nations) in 1982 due to its unique ecological importance. Its
spectacular reptiles and wildlife include elephants, hippos, buffaloes,
wild dog, crocodiles, wildebeest, impalas, water buck, black and
white Columbus monkey, giraffe, velvet and blue monkey. A large
population of predators has been recorded.
These
include lion, leopards, cheetah and spotted hyena and about 442
species of birds are there of both resident and migratory.
